SA vs IND: Rohit Sharma leaves for South Africa to resume India duties after World Cup defeat

Rohit Sharma, on Friday, December 15, left for South Africa to represent India in the two-match Test series. The 36-year-old is set to resume national duties almost a month after his team lost to Pat Cummins’ Australia in the final of World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Rohit isn’t a part of India’s ongoing white-ball series. However, he is the skipper of the Test team for the series, scheduled to get underway on Tuesday, December 26 at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Earlier, Rohit opened up on India’s heartbreaking defeat in the final in front of a packed house in Ahmedabad. He admitted that the loss was ‘not easy to digest’ by any stretch of the imagination.

“I had no idea how to come back from this. I had no clue what to do. My family and friends kept me going, and kept things pretty light around me, which was quite helpful. It was not easy to digest, but life moves on, and you have to move on. Honestly, it was tough, and it was not so easy to move on,” Rohit was quoted as saying.

“I have always grown up watching the 50-over World Cup. To me, that was the ultimate prize. We have worked all these years for that World Cup. And it’s disappointing if you don’t get through it, you don’t get what you want. You get disappointed. You get frustrated as well,” he added.

Rohit scored 47 runs in the final and took India off to a flying start. But once Glenn Maxwell dismissed him, India lost the plot completely. Later, Travis Head hit a hundred to hand India the defeat.

Rohit was recently replaced by Hardik Pandya as the skipper of the Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024).
