Trump surges in key swing states as Biden faces voters’ ire over inflation: Poll

Republican frontrunner Donald Trump is leading in key 2024 swing states, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, as Democratic frontrunner and US President Joe Biden is facing voters’ ire over inflation, a survey conducted by Bloomberg News revealed.

The survey data from the last two phases show Joe Biden’s growing political troubles are coming from within his party as he trails in the battleground states that will decide the 2024 election.

Former US President Trump has pulled ahead of President Biden in must-win Michigan as voters remain pessimistic about the US economy, the poll showed.

Trump led Biden 46 per cent to 42 per cent in the poll conducted from November 27 to December 5, after they were tied in the same survey done in October and early November. Trump’s lead is just within the poll’s margin of error of 4 percentage points. The former president now leads in the monthly tracking poll of all seven swing states that will decide the 2024 presidential election.

Biden’s support decline is evident among suburban women in Michigan and voters aged 18 to 34. Despite being the first sitting president to join a picket line in support of the United Auto Workers, he struggles to improve his standing with union households, a factor aiding Trump, as per the poll.

The potential loss of Michigan could prove detrimental to Biden’s reelection prospects, given its critical role in his 2020 victory, where he outpaced Trump by 154,188 votes. In 2016, Trump won the state by a narrow margin of 10,704 votes, emphasising its significance alongside Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

Inflation appears to be a key factor eroding Biden’s support among women, who, as primary grocery shoppers, have witnessed the rising costs of necessities firsthand. Women, in general, express less satisfaction with the current economy and the escalating prices of daily essentials, reflecting a sentiment that the economic impact is hitting them harder, the survey shows.

Furthermore, the poll highlights Biden’s struggle to connect with voters in Michigan’s union households, a crucial demographic in a state integral to the US auto industry.
