Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has admitted that the growing speculation around Erik ten Hag’s future as manager has been affecting the players as well. United have been under intense scrutiny, having failed to register a win in their last five matches across all competitions, leading to rumors about a potential sacking of the Dutch manager.
United’s poor start to the season, despite spending heavily in the summer transfer window, has further fuelled concerns. With only three wins in their first 11 matches of the season, the pressure on ten Hag has been mounting. The side’s most recent 0-0 draw against Aston Villa extended their winless streak, and Evans revealed how the ongoing uncertainty surrounding ten Hag’s future has begun to impact the players’ mentality.
“It does affect the players. It’s on our minds too. I think the more experience I’ve got in my career I’ve made sure I do everything you I to be ready and give everything I can to the team,” Evans told BBC Match of the Day.
“That was the important thing to show the spirit in the team. Everyone competed as much as they could. That’s a pleasing thing to see. You never have everyone available throughout the season. It’s important everyone coming in is ready to go when they’re ready,” Evans added.
Despite the external pressure, Erik ten Hag remains confident that his position at the club is secure, citing continued backing from the United board. However, with the team’s European competition form in a troubling state—they haven’t won a European match in their last 10 games—ten Hag’s future may hinge on the outcome of upcoming fixtures.
One key match in particular, United’s clash against Turkish side Fenerbahce on October 25, is seen as pivotal for the manager’s future at the club. Before that, the Red Devils will return to Premier League action against Brentford on October 19 after the international break. These matches could be make-or-break for both ten Hag and the team’s fortunes this season.
