Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer was over the moon after Bangladesh won the 2023 edition of the U19 Asia Cup. On Sunday, December 17, the Junior Tigers beat the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by 195 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Jaffer, who has been working as a batting consultant for the U19 team for a couple of years now, congratulated Bangladesh on winning their maiden Asia Cup title.
“First ever U19 Asia Cup Title for @BCBtigers! We saw the dream, and the boys fulfilled it today. So happy and proud of this lot. Well played boys Champions of Asia,” Jaffer wrote.
After being put in to bat first, Bangladesh put up a decent score of 282 for the loss of eight wickets. Ashiqur Rahman Shibli was again their star performer after he racked up 129 runs off 149 balls with the help of 12 fours and one six.
After Jishan Alam got out cheaply, Shibli and Chowdhury Md Rizwan put on 125 runs for the second wicket. Thereafter, Shibli joined hands with Ariful Islam and the duo stitched together a partnership of 86 runs for the third wicket. Rizwan and Ariful scored 60 and 50 respectively.
Bangladesh bowled their opponents out for 87 in 24.5 overs. Maruf Mridha and Rohanat Doullah Borson picked up three wickets apiece. Iqbal Hossain Emon and Sheikh Paevez Jibon accounted for two scalps apiece.
Bangladesh won all five of their matches in the tournament and also beat India in the semi-final by four wickets when they chased down a tricky target of 189.
