Run out against England reminds of heartbreaking dismissal in T20 World Cup

Harmanpreet Kaur got out in a bizarre manner in the first innings of the Only Test between India and England at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. In the third and final session of the day’s play, she succumbed to a run out after Danni Wyatt’s direct hit shattered the stumps at the striker’s end.

Harmanpreet defended a ball from off-spinner Charlie Dean on the off-side, after which the Indian skipper wandered outside the crease. Wyatt showed great presence of mind to throw down the stumps. Kaur had a lot of time to get her bat inside the crease, but then, her bat got stuck on the pitch.

The decision was referred to the third umpire, following which it was seen that Harmanpreet’s bat was outside the crease when the bails were dislodged. The right-handed batter scored 49 runs off 81 balls with six fours.

Not the first time for Harmanpreet

Harmanpreet’s dismissal was reminiscent of the way she got out in the semi-final of the Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year against Meg Lanning’s Australia. The dismissal derailed India’s innings as the Women in Blue lost the match by five runs at the Newlands in Cape Town.

Harmanpreet reached her crease at the striker’s end, but her bat jammed on the pitch. Beth Mooney hurled in a strong throw, after which Alyssa Healy took the bails off at the striker’s end. After getting out, Harmanpreet went back to the dugout, absolutely fuming.

The 34-year-old scored 52 runs off 34 balls, but her knock went in vain as India crashed out of the T20 World Cup.

As far as the ongoing Test match is concerned, India scored 410 for the loss of seven wickets in 94 overs after opting to bat first. Satheesh Shubha, Jemimah Rodrigues, Yastika Bhatia and Deepti Sharma scored half-centuries.
