NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his condolences following massive landslides that have claimed 19 lives in several hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district.
In a social media post on X, the former Wayanad MP said, “I am deeply pained by the devastating landslides near Meppadi. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families who have lost their loved ones.
I hope those who are still trapped are rescued safely soon.”
“I have spoken with the Kerala Chief Minister and the Wayanad District Collector, who have assured me that rescue operations are in progress. I have requested them to ensure effective coordination with all relevant agencies, establish a control room, and keep us informed about any additional assistance required for the relief efforts.” he added.
Gandhi also claimed that he will be reaching out to Union ministers to secure all possible assistance for Wayanad and urged UDF workers to assist the administration in the ongoing rescue and relief operations.
“I will speak to Union Ministers and request them to provide all assistance possible to Wayanad,” he said
“I urge all UDF workers to assist the administration in the rescue and relief operations,” he added.
Meanwhile, central and state authorities have launched massive search and rescue operations. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has said that Fireforce and NDRF teams have been deployed to the affected area, with an additional NDRF team en route to Wayanad.
Two teams of Kannur Defence Security Corps have also been instructed to move to Wayanad to assist in the rescue efforts.

Sai Saket Bhandar, who scored a perfect 45, will pursue business administration at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, among other prestigious offers.
Lasya Sreenaga Kuchibotla, also scoring a perfect 45, will pursue Psychology MSci with honours at University College London, a four-year bachelor’s with integrated master’s program, among other prestigious offers.
The students of Oakridge International School, Gachibowli have also received offers from top 100 global universities such as the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, King’s College London, UCL, Cornell University, University of California Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon University, UCLA, University of Southern California, New York University, Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Texas Austin Honors Program, Barnard College, and Yale University.
